Developer 4A Games has confirmed that Metro 2039 will launch on February 4, 2027, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The upcoming first-person shooter returns to post-apocalyptic Moscow with a darker story shaped by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The new chapter explores authoritarian rule, survival, and the consequences of staying silent in the face of oppression.
The release marks the series’ first major new installment since Metro Exodus in 2019. Developed by teams in Ukraine and Malta, the game continues the franchise’s emphasis on atmospheric storytelling, exploration, stealth, and survival combat.
Metro 2039 Returns to Moscow Under a Brutal Regime
Set in 2039, the story follows survivors living beneath Moscow’s radioactive ruins. After decades of conflict, the underground population falls under Hunter's control, a former Spartan who leads the authoritarian faction known as the Novoreich.
Hunter promises a better future on the surface, but his regime maintains control through propaganda, misinformation, and fear. Players play the Stranger, a former Spartan living in exile. Haunted by his past, he must return to Moscow and confront the oppressive world he abandoned.
The story draws inspiration from the Metro novels by Dmitry Glukhovsky, who worked with 4A Games on the new chapter. In an open letter to the community, the studio explained how the ongoing war in Ukraine influenced its narrative direction.
Many developers continue working in Kyiv and elsewhere in Ukraine despite power outages and missile attacks. The studio says those experiences have given the series’ longstanding antiwar themes a more immediate meaning.
New Gameplay Features: Ray Tracing and 60 FPS Performance
4A Games has also revealed console gameplay captured on PlayStation 5 Pro. The footage highlights ruined environments, close-range combat, and improvements to the studio’s proprietary 4A Engine.
According to publisher PLAION, Metro 2039 will offer a performance mode targeting 4K resolution at 60 frames per second with ray tracing on PS5, PS5 Pro, and Xbox Series X. Additional technical details will be announced before launch.
The game retains the series’ single-player focus, combining combat with stealth and exploration. Players will navigate dangerous environments while uncovering the Stranger’s history and the forces controlling Moscow’s underground.
Metro 2039 Release Date, Platforms, and Editions
Metro 2039 launches February 4, 2027, on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Some regions, including Australia and New Zealand, will receive the game on February 5 because of regional release timing.
Preorders opened on October 13, 2026, with Standard, Deluxe, and Collector’s editions available. The Deluxe Edition includes a planned post-launch story expansion, while the Collector’s Edition features a wearable replica Spartan helmet. A Specialist Pack containing three upgrade blueprints is offered as a preorder bonus.
The February release will return players to the franchise’s original underground setting, with a different protagonist and political conflict. Beyond its technical improvements, Metro 2039 represents a particularly personal project for its Ukrainian developers, whose wartime experiences have directly influenced the story they want to tell.
