Grok Bot usage limits have prompted complaints from subscribers who unexpectedly exhausted their weekly allowances over Halloween weekend. Elon Musk acknowledged the issue Sunday, Nov. 1, citing the high cost of operating SpaceX’s AI agent.
Several users reported sudden increases in recorded usage despite little or no activity. One subscriber reported an unexpected increase, while another described usage jumping from roughly 50% to 100%.
Musk addressed the complaints in an X reply, writing, “The cost of serving Grok Bot was unsustainably high relative to revenue.” He did not disclose operating costs or explain how subscriber allowances had changed.
Grok Bot Usage Limits Raise Questions About AI Costs
Grok Bot is an autonomous AI agent designed to complete tasks on users’ behalf. The service is part of SpaceX’s expanding artificial intelligence business, which offers subscription plans combining Grok, Cursor and X Premium features.
Despite complaints about usage restrictions, Musk continued promoting the product. He highlighted its ability to purchase gifts for family members and recently described Grok Bot as his fastest-growing product.
The restrictions come shortly after SpaceX reported strong financial results from its Super Intelligence division. The business accounted for approximately 52% of third-quarter revenue and generated $431 million in operating profit. That figure included $1.2 billion in acquisition-related compensation expenses tied to Cursor.
However, the division’s profitability does not establish whether Grok Bot itself generates enough revenue to cover its operating expenses. Musk has not clarified whether the reported usage changes are permanent or how future weekly allowances will be calculated.
