Airbnb.org Gala Draws Stars as Airbnb Pledges $500M for Housing

Airbnb.org held its first gala in Los Angeles, bringing together celebrities to support emergency housing. Airbnb announced a $500 million commitment over five years, including contributions from every completed stay, to expand free temporary housing for people facing crises.

Airbnb.org held its inaugural gala in Los Angeles on October 28, drawing celebrities and unexpected attention online. The Airbnb.org gala celebrated the nonprofit’s emergency housing work and introduced a new funding commitment from Airbnb.

Founded in 2020, Airbnb.org provides free temporary housing for people affected by disasters and other crises. Since its launch, the organization has provided more than 1.6 million nights of emergency accommodation.

Airbnb.org Gala Marks $500 Million Housing Commitment

Airbnb announced it will donate 10 cents of revenue for every completed stay starting October 28. The new funding model, alongside additional contributions, is expected to provide $500 million over five years.

The nonprofit aims to provide 1 million nights of free emergency housing annually by 2030. It will also expand assistance for families traveling for medical treatment, domestic violence survivors and veterans facing serious illnesses.

Airbnb said the contributions would not increase booking costs or reduce host payments. The company reported $12.2 billion in revenue last year.

Celebrity Gala Draws Attention and Online Reactions

Jimmy Kimmel hosted the Los Angeles event, which featured a Charli XCX performance. Chef José Andrés curated the food, while guests included Serena Williams, Demi Lovato, Charlize Theron and Cynthia Erivo.

Despite the celebrity turnout, the gala surprised social media users. Reactions appeared in posts by @etoilepattinson, @GabrielDivina2 and @MediumSizeMeech.

Other posts from @selinameyersgf, @BLAMElTONYOU and @quepaso_daniel added to the online discussion surrounding the event.

An Airbnb spokesperson said fundraising was not the evening’s main purpose. Guests could make donations, but the nonprofit had no fundraising target. The company did not disclose table prices or confirm whether the gala would become an annual event.

Airbnb’s Housing Role Remains Under Scrutiny

The charitable initiative comes as Airbnb continues facing criticism over short-term rentals and housing affordability. A CNN report examined concerns about vacation rentals and their effects on local housing markets.

European policymakers have also considered stronger restrictions on short-term rentals in areas facing housing pressure.

While those concerns remain separate from Airbnb.org’s charitable operations, the gala brought new attention to the company’s emergency housing efforts and its expanded financial commitment.
