Meta is giving businesses a new way to manage WhatsApp Business setup by allowing AI agents to handle many of the technical steps involved in configuring messaging tools.

The company announced a new WhatsApp Business Tools MCP server that connects AI coding agents with the WhatsApp Business Platform. The goal is to simplify account setup and management by allowing developers to describe tasks through an AI agent instead of manually moving between multiple developer tools.

AI agents simplify WhatsApp Business configuration

Previously, setting up WhatsApp Business messaging required developers to work across several Meta services, including the Developer Console, Business Manager, API documentation, and coding environments.

With the new system, developers can use an AI agent to assist with tasks such as creating a WhatsApp Business account, adding and verifying a phone number, registering access to the Cloud API, and completing required setup steps.

The service is designed for businesses using WhatsApp Business to communicate with customers through messaging conversations.

Meta expands its MCP ecosystem.

The WhatsApp Business Tools MCP is based on Model Context Protocol, a technology that allows AI agents to securely interact with external services and complete tasks using connected tools.

Meta already offers MCP servers for other developer needs, including tools for managing ads, monitoring app configurations, and working with its social technology platforms through Meta’s developer MCP tools.

Other technology companies have also introduced MCP servers to help AI agents work with their platforms. Microsoft, for example, has developed MCP tools to support developer workflows and software creation.

More automation for business messaging

Beyond initial setup, Meta said businesses can use AI agents for additional WhatsApp Business tasks. These include creating messaging templates, editing existing templates, testing messages and webhooks, and checking issues related to payments, business verification, and terms of service.

During configuration and troubleshooting, Meta’s Social Technologies MCP server can also help AI agents discover API endpoints, search documentation, and identify potential errors.

The move reflects a broader shift toward AI agents that can perform complex software tasks by connecting directly with business platforms and developer tools.
