The Uber ChatGPT Work rollout will give approximately 30,000 employees worldwide access to OpenAI’s AI-powered workplace agent. The company announced the expansion on Oct. 22, following an initial pilot involving 1,000 Uber employees.
ChatGPT Work, introduced in July, helps businesses automate workflows, analyze information and complete complex tasks. Uber is expanding access across departments while letting teams decide how the technology fits their work.
How Uber ChatGPT Work Rollout Supports Employees
Uber tested the platform with employees from finance, operations, product and other departments. About 80% of participants were non-engineers, according to Sumanth Sukumar, Uber’s vice president of engineering.
Employees used the software to analyze operational data, identify trends and develop recommendations. They also translated training materials for international markets and created interactive dashboards for daily tasks.
Uber separately assigned 30 AI engineers to work with internal teams on automation projects. The two-week experiment helped identify repetitive tasks that could benefit from AI assistance.
Sukumar said Uber wants employees to explore practical applications rather than follow a single companywide workflow. OpenAI worked closely with Uber to integrate the platform into its operations.
OpenAI Expands Its Enterprise AI Business
The deployment represents another major corporate agreement for OpenAI as competition with Anthropic intensifies. OpenAI has also expanded its enterprise reach through an IBM consulting partnership involving ChatGPT Work and other AI products.
An August analysis of business AI spending cited Ramp data showing faster quarterly spending growth for OpenAI than Anthropic. However, Anthropic maintained a larger share among the businesses tracked.
The expansion follows OpenAI’s broader push into enterprise AI, particularly workplace productivity and software development. Both companies are competing to secure long-term business customers.
Uber has not disclosed the cost of providing ChatGPT Work to its global workforce. The company plans to evaluate employee adoption, emerging workflows and productivity improvements before determining its next steps.
Sukumar said those findings will guide future AI deployment across the business. Uber has not announced specific productivity targets or financial savings from the companywide rollout.
