The X pointing-hand prompt confused users after a large animated hand appeared next to the platform’s Promote button. The graphic interrupts people composing posts and directs attention toward X’s paid promotion feature.
Complaints began circulating Oct. 26, with users sharing screenshots of the unexpected animation. The Verge’s Tom Warren reported seeing the hand while writing a post. Molly O’Shea questioned the unusual graphic, while Matt Slotnick urged X not to repeat the experience.
X Pointing Hand Prompt Draws User Complaints
The animation appears designed to encourage users to pay for more visibility for their posts. X’s Promote feature allows users to pay for distribution beyond their existing audience.
Developer Dak shared a screenshot showing the hand appearing unexpectedly while composing a post. Another user, Ershad Kaleebullah, compared the experience to a jump scare. He also observed that the animation appeared while his draft mentioned engagement farming.
TBPN president Dylan Abruscato described the tactic as “the most Nikita-coded thing I’ve ever seen.” The remark referenced Nikita Bier, X’s former head of product, who was known for aggressive engagement strategies.
The company has not explained why the graphic appears or whether it is part of a limited experiment. Some users have speculated about a Halloween prank, but X has not confirmed that explanation.
Peter Sellis Takes Over X Product Leadership
The complaints coincide with a leadership change at the social media platform. On Oct. 26, Peter Sellis announced his appointment as X’s new product chief. Sellis previously held senior product positions at Snap and Discord.
He succeeds Bier, who departed in August after nearly a year leading X’s product development. No confirmed connection links Sellis to the new pointing-hand animation.
X has been experimenting with additional advertising opportunities. Earlier this year, the platform tested advertising links beneath posts, allowing users to access promoted products directly.
Unlike that advertising experiment, the new animation appears during post creation rather than in published content. X has not disclosed how widely it is being shown or whether it plans to retain the feature.
