Eric Wu, the founder and former CEO of real estate technology company Opendoor, has launched a new startup focused on using artificial intelligence to support construction workers and field labor teams.

Called NavigateAI, the company emerged from stealth in May with $25 million in seed funding at a $225 million post-money valuation. Elad Gil led the round, with participation from Khosla Ventures, Fifth Wall, Lennar, Tishman Speyer, Helix Electric, and several technology executives.

AI Copilots for the Construction Workforce

NavigateAI is developing AI assistants designed to act as hands-free expert coaches for workers building and maintaining physical infrastructure.

The company’s technology runs on smartphones and is also being developed for use with Meta AI glasses. Workers can use the system to inspect construction tasks, ask whether installations are correct, check specifications and access building information, manufacturer manuals and company policies in real time.

NavigateAI is also working with Meta on safety certification for AI glasses in environments that require protective eyewear.

Addressing Construction Labour Shortages

Wu’s startup is targeting a construction industry facing a growing workforce challenge. Reports on data centre construction shortages have highlighted rising demand for skilled workers as AI infrastructure projects expand.

The challenge is also tied to an ageing workforce and difficulty attracting new workers. Industry research has examined efforts to bring younger workers into construction, while reports have covered workforce pressures affecting the sector.

Large AI data centre projects have increased demand for construction labour. Meta has invested in construction workforce development as companies compete for skilled workers needed to build new facilities.

From Data Centres to Field Operations

NavigateAI believes AI assistants can help workers complete tasks more efficiently by providing information directly at the job site. The company is initially focused on construction and other field-based industries where access to technical expertise can be difficult.

Demand for workers supporting AI infrastructure is increasing as companies expand data centre projects. Major AI data centre developments have increased construction requirements, creating additional pressure on available labour pools.

Staffing research has identified labour availability as a major challenge for data centre operators as the sector continues expanding.

Building a Data Advantage

Beyond its software business, NavigateAI is collecting data from real-world construction workflows. Each completed task can generate information about how workers perform jobs correctly or incorrectly, creating a dataset that Wu believes could become valuable for future automation and robotics applications.

The company still faces challenges, including worker adoption, safety responsibilities and proving exactly how much value its AI tools create for construction companies.

NavigateAI’s backers include investors from both construction and technology industries, giving Wu’s latest venture connections across the markets it aims to serve.
