Mass Effect: Universe Trailer Reveals BioWare’s Canceled Sequel

A leaked trailer for BioWare’s canceled Mass Effect sequel reveals a new protagonist, returning character Liara T’Soni, and cinematic action. The footage surfaced one day after EA announced BioWare’s closure and was independently verified by Bloomberg and IGN.

A leaked trailer for Mass Effect: Universe has revealed what BioWare was developing before Electronic Arts shut down the studio. The footage surfaced on October 22, 2026, one day after EA canceled the next Mass Effect game. It introduces a new protagonist, familiar alien species, and Liara T’Soni’s return.

The trailer appeared on Reddit and was later authenticated by Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier and IGN. Although the project will never reach players in its planned form, the footage offers a rare look at BioWare’s unfinished science-fiction RPG.

Mass Effect: Universe Trailer Shows a New Story

The approximately two-minute leaked trailer opens with a former soldier wearing an N7-style coat. He encounters a mysterious Asari woman in a crowded bar, where their conversation turns toward preventing conflicts before they escalate.

The scene develops into a firefight involving several characters. The combat sequences feature familiar Mass Effect abilities, including enemies suspended by biotic powers. Other footage shows alien environments, spacecraft, and characters examining a holographic map.

Liara T’Soni, a major character from the original trilogy, also appears. Her presence suggests BioWare intended to maintain connections with the earlier games while introducing a different central character.

The footage carries an internal disclaimer identifying it as in-engine material created with pre-production assets. It should not be mistaken for finished gameplay or a representation of the game’s final quality.

In a public confirmation, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier authenticated the trailer as footage from BioWare’s canceled project. IGN independently confirmed its legitimacy.

BioWare Closure Ends Development

Electronic Arts announced BioWare’s closure on October 21, ending more than three decades of role-playing game development. The decision also canceled the next Mass Effect title, announced in 2020.

In its official farewell statement, BioWare confirmed it had ended development on the project. The studio thanked players for supporting franchises including Mass Effect, Dragon Age, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.

The closure forms part of broader restructuring at EA. The publisher is cutting approximately 400 positions, including around 50 at BioWare, according to Associated Press reporting.

EA is concentrating its resources on fewer large-scale projects. These include its established sports franchises, Battlefield, Marvel’s Iron Man, and the next Star Wars Jedi game.

The leaked trailer suggests BioWare had a clear narrative direction, even as the project remained in early development. Its apparent focus on smaller conflicts and espionage offered a different approach from the original trilogy’s galaxy-wide threats.

What Happens to the Mass Effect Franchise?

The cancellation ends this game, but it doesn’t necessarily end Mass Effect as a franchise. EA has not announced another game or confirmed plans to transfer development to a different studio.

Amazon’s planned Mass Effect television adaptation reportedly remains in active development for Prime Video. The series is a separate project and isn’t affected by the canceled game’s production status.

For fans, the trailer provides a glimpse of a sequel they may never play. It also highlights the creative work lost when long-running studios close before completing their projects.

Mass Effect: Universe remains unfinished, not an upcoming release. The leaked footage offers an intriguing look at its intended direction, but no confirmed plan exists to revive development.
