Google is experimenting with a new way to make game development accessible to people without traditional coding skills. The company has launched Playground, an experimental AI-powered platform that lets users create browser-based games by describing what they want through text prompts.

Playground can start from a blank project, starter prompts or guided creation tools. Users can shape gameplay, rules, characters and environments through conversation with the system, then test and revise the game without writing code.

Games can be created, played and shared in the browser

Creators can build different types of experiences, including single-player and multiplayer games, and continue adjusting elements such as mechanics, physics and visual design after the initial generation. The platform also supports community features such as multiplayer gameplay in select genres and in-game leaderboards.

Because Playground is browser-based, finished games can run on phones and computers. Creators can keep projects private, share them through a direct link or publish them to the Explore gallery, where other users can discover and play them.

Google says published games undergo safety screening and can also be reported by users. A Play Games profile lets people choose a handle, like games, compete on leaderboards, and follow creators.

Unity Spark integration is planned

Google also plans to integrate Unity Spark, which is currently being tested. The upcoming integration is intended to give Playground creators access to higher-fidelity 3D capabilities, more advanced game mechanics and the flexibility of the Unity runtime.

The idea is to let users begin with a simple AI-generated project and potentially develop it into a more sophisticated game without leaving the broader creation workflow.

Playground starts as a U.S. experiment

Playground is initially available to users age 18 and older in the U.S. Google describes the service as an early experiment and says a user’s Google AI subscription will tier access.

The launch adds Google to a growing group of companies using generative AI to reduce the technical barrier to game development. Rather than replacing conventional game engines outright, Playground is designed to give more people a way to turn an idea into a playable browser game through natural-language instructions.
