Light Launches $299 Flip Phone With Minimalist Features and Colourful Design
Light has introduced the $299 Light Flip, a minimalist flip phone featuring a distraction-free operating system, colourful design, 5G connectivity and essential tools for users seeking an alternative to smartphones.
Light, the startup known for its minimalist mobile devices, has introduced the Light Flip, a compact flip phone that combines the company's distraction-free software with a classic clamshell design. The launch marks a notable shift for the company, whose previous devices all featured touchscreens, and reflects growing demand from younger consumers looking for simpler alternatives to modern smartphones.
Light co-founder Kaiwei Tang, who helped develop the original Motorola Razr more than two decades ago, said the company was initially surprised by the enthusiasm for flip phones. After interviewing younger users over several years, Light discovered that many members of Generation Z appreciated the simplicity of flip phones despite regularly criticising their poor build quality. The research convinced the company that there was room for a better-designed device that preserved the appeal of a flip phone while improving the overall experience.
Working alongside co-founder Joe Hollier, Tang decided to combine the software developed for the Light Phone range with an entirely new flip phone design. The result is the Light Flip, which delivers the same minimalist operating system and suite of built-in tools found on the company’s touchscreen devices. Features such as an alarm, calculator, calendar and the company’s software development platform are all included, but users interact entirely through physical controls instead of a touchscreen.
A more affordable entry into the Light ecosystem
Pricing has long been one of Light’s biggest challenges. The company’s philosophy revolves around offering fewer digital distractions, yet producing specialist hardware in small volumes has kept prices relatively high. Its previous flagship, the Light Phone III, sells unlocked for $799, making it difficult for some customers to justify paying premium prices for a deliberately simplified device.
The new Light Flip significantly lowers the cost of entry, launching at $299. The lower price is achieved by removing several premium components found in the Light Phone III, including the touchscreen, NFC capabilities and a selfie camera. The handset also replaces aluminium construction with a plastic body, helping reduce manufacturing costs while allowing the company to introduce several vibrant colour options, including black, red, yellow, pink, navy blue and light grey.
For Hollier, the colourful finish is part of the appeal. While he previously considered himself committed to full QWERTY keyboards, he admitted he enjoyed using traditional T9 predictive text during testing and believes the bright colour choices make the device even more attractive to users seeking something different from today’s uniform smartphone designs.
Flexible purchasing options and essential features
Alongside the lower retail price, Light is experimenting with new financing options. The company recently tested mobile contracts through Andrew Yang’s anti-doomscrolling wireless carrier Noble Mobile. Customers who subscribe to Light’s own mobile service can purchase the Light Flip through a two-year agreement costing $39 per month, while the more expensive Light Phone III will be available under a similar plan for $59 per month.
Although intentionally minimalist, the Light Flip still includes many modern essentials. It features a 2.8-inch OLED display inside the handset, while intentionally omitting an external screen after customer feedback suggested users preferred avoiding unnecessary distractions. Instead, a small notification light on the front alerts owners to incoming activity without requiring the phone to be opened.
The device supports both 5G and 4G LTE networks, enabling users to download podcasts and play locally stored music. Audio can be enjoyed using either the built-in 3.5 mm headphone jack or Bluetooth headphones. Additional features include USB-C charging, compatibility with both eSIM and Nano SIM cards, and a single 12-megapixel rear camera for occasional photography.
Building a community around digital minimalism
Light expects the Light Flip to begin shipping in April 2027, leaving customers with a relatively long wait between placing a preorder and receiving the device. To maintain engagement during that period, the company is launching a “Flip Your Life” initiative featuring bi-weekly newsletters designed to help customers gradually prepare for switching away from smartphones.
The programme is intended to build a community around the transition rather than market the device. Light believes moving away from smartphones can be challenging because people have become accustomed to instant internet access, mobile payments, music streaming and messaging platforms such as WhatsApp and iMessage. By encouraging users to share the experience, the company hopes customers will find it easier to adopt a more intentional relationship with technology.
Rather than positioning itself purely against large technology companies, Light says its mission is centred on creating a healthier digital lifestyle. Hollier said the movement behind minimalist phones is driven as much by optimism as scepticism, arguing that simpler devices can help people spend less time endlessly scrolling and more time enjoying everyday life without constant digital interruptions.
