Meta and YouTube Reverse Ad Restrictions on Elon Musk Documentary
Meta and YouTube have cleared ads for Alex Gibney’s upcoming Elon Musk documentary after initially restricting the trailer as political content.
Meta and YouTube have reversed restrictions that initially blocked paid promotion for “Musk,” director Alex Gibney’s upcoming documentary about Elon Musk.
The Hollywood Reporter reported Friday that Meta, YouTube, TikTok and X had rejected ads for the film’s trailer. Meta later said the rejection was an error and that it was restoring the ads.
YouTube also said Saturday that while the trailer itself had always remained available, its advertising system temporarily restricted the promotional campaign before a review cleared it to run.
Platforms initially flagged the trailer as political content
Meta, TikTok and YouTube reportedly cited political-content rules when rejecting the advertising. The film’s U.S. distributor, Bleecker Street, challenged the decisions, while the documentary trailer remains available on YouTube.
X has not announced a similar reversal. Musk, who owns the platform, has publicly criticised Gibney, including in a recent post on X.
Gibney’s documentary draws strong early reviews
“Musk” premiered at the Venice International Film Festival earlier this month. Early critical reception has been strong, with reviews tracked by Metacritic and the film holding a 100% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of the report.
The nearly four-hour documentary examines Musk’s technology career, political relationships and personal life. Vulture critic Bilge Ebiri described it as both a character study and an examination of Musk’s influence on business and politics.
The film is scheduled for U.S. theatrical release on October 9. The Hollywood Reporter previously reported that Universal Pictures was reconsidering aspects of its international distribution plans amid concerns about political repercussions.
Universal later said it still intends to release the documentary internationally and is working out its strategy, according to Business Insider.
