Pentagon Adds ChatGPT and Grok AI Tools for Military Personnel
The Pentagon expands its secure AI platform with ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government, giving military and civilian personnel access to AI tools.
The Pentagon has expanded access to generative artificial intelligence tools by adding customised versions of OpenAI’s ChatGPT and xAI’s Grok to its secure AI platform for military and civilian personnel.
The new tools, ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government, are now available through GenAI.mil, a Department of Defence platform designed to provide access to commercial AI models while keeping sensitive government information away from consumer services.
Pentagon Expands Secure AI Platform With ChatGPT and Grok
ChatGPT Mil, developed through OpenAI’s government-focused program, is designed to provide features familiar to commercial ChatGPT users, including chat, file handling, projects and custom GPT capabilities.
The Department of Defence said the tool will support unclassified tasks such as administrative work, logistics, planning and policy-related activities. Additional capabilities are expected to be added over time.
Grok for Government is being introduced through Starshield AI, SpaceX’s secure government-focused technology platform. The Pentagon said the tool is intended to provide faster access to information, improve collaboration and support operational tasks.
Defence Department Builds Broader AI Infrastructure
GenAI.mil was created to give Department of Defence personnel access to advanced AI models without relying on standard consumer versions that may collect or process data differently. The platform initially included Google’s Gemini before expanding with additional models.
The Defence Department said the platform has already attracted significant adoption, with more than 1.7 million unique users from a total workforce of around 3 million military and civilian personnel.
The addition of ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government reflects the Pentagon’s broader effort to integrate commercial AI technology into government operations while maintaining security requirements.
AI Partnerships Expand Across Defence Technology
The Pentagon has continued forming partnerships with major technology companies as it develops AI capabilities. The department has worked with companies including Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, Nvidia and other AI firms.
The rollout also comes after disagreements between the Pentagon and some AI companies over how military organisations should use advanced AI systems. Some providers have pushed for limits and safety conditions around certain applications.
SpaceX’s Starshield platform provides secure satellite and government technology capabilities based on SpaceX systems. The Pentagon said Grok for Government will support use cases ranging from research and analysis to logistics and supply-chain operations.
