Thrive Capital’s Josh Kushner Responds to FIFA Investment Controversy as Firm Hires Alex Spiro
Thrive Capital founder Josh Kushner addresses FIFA Forward Enterprise controversy as the firm hires lawyer Alex Spiro amid legal scrutiny.
Thrive Capital founder Josh Kushner has defended the venture firm’s involvement in a proposed FIFA investment project that was abandoned after opposition from football organisations and other stakeholders.
The dispute centres on FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), a planned commercial entity that would have controlled parts of FIFA’s business operations, including revenue streams connected to competitions such as the World Cup. The proposal was designed to be owned by FIFA’s 211 member associations, with those organisations allowed to sell portions of their ownership to private investors.
FIFA worked with JPMorgan to identify potential investors for the proposed company. Thrive Capital agreed to participate as a lead investor in a possible $4.2 billion secondary share transaction that would have represented a 20% stake in FFE at a reported $20 billion valuation.
The plan triggered opposition from several football groups that raised concerns about private equity involvement and outside influence over FIFA’s commercial structure. Critics argued that the arrangement could affect how financial benefits from global football were distributed among member associations.
FIFA ultimately abandoned the proposal before member associations could vote on creating the new entity. The controversy has since contributed to broader criticism of FIFA president Gianni Infantino, with some football supporters also calling for his resignation.
Fans have launched petitions demanding changes to FIFA leadership as criticism of the organisation’s direction continues.
UEFA Legal Challenge Brings Thrive Capital Into FIFA Dispute
The failed investment plan has also drawn legal scrutiny. UEFA has taken legal action connected to the proposed FIFA Forward Enterprise deal and has sought access to documents related to the project’s valuation, investment discussions, term sheets, and potential investors.
One of UEFA’s claims is that the proposed valuation of FIFA Forward Enterprise was too low. The legal action has increased attention on the financial structure behind the proposed company and the role of private investors.
FIFA’s membership structure includes 211 national football associations worldwide. UEFA represents 55 European associations, while Concacaf represents 41 associations across North America, Central America, and the Caribbean.
Josh Kushner Defends Thrive Capital’s FIFA Role
Kushner addressed the controversy in a statement first published by Axios. He said Thrive continues to believe the idea behind FIFA Forward Enterprise was intended to expand access to investment and ownership opportunities across global football.
The statement said the project aimed to direct more capital toward FIFA member associations, particularly countries with fewer resources, while supporting areas such as local talent development, grassroots football, and improvements for fans.
Kushner said the proposal would have required approval through a vote by FIFA member associations and was not intended as a mandatory arrangement. He added that Thrive underestimated the political challenges surrounding international football.
“Had we known what this would devolve into, we would not have gotten involved.”
Thrive Capital Hires Alex Spiro for Legal Representation
As the dispute continues, Thrive Capital has hired attorney Alex Spiro to represent the firm, according to a court document. Spiro, a partner at Quinn Emanuel, has represented several high-profile clients, including Elon Musk and other public figures.
Spiro has handled major legal matters involving Musk, including defamation litigation, Tesla-related cases, and disputes connected to Musk’s acquisition of Twitter.
The appointment brings a well-known trial lawyer into a dispute involving one of the world’s largest sports organisations and a venture firm that has traditionally operated with limited public attention.
