Eric Schmidt’s Anthropic stake reportedly reaches 1% ahead of IPO

Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt reportedly owns about 1% of Anthropic, roughly half of CEO Dario Amodei’s stake. His early investment could be worth $20 billion if the AI company achieves a $2 trillion valuation.

Eric Schmidt’s Anthropic stake is reportedly around 1%, giving the former Google CEO a potentially valuable holding in the AI startup. The investment could be worth $20 billion if Anthropic reaches a $2 trillion valuation.

According to an Oct. 19 Bloomberg report, Schmidt invested tens of millions of dollars during Anthropic’s Series A funding round in 2021. PitchBook data valued the company at approximately $461 million at the time.

His reported ownership is roughly half the 2% stake held by Anthropic co-founder and CEO Dario Amodei. The company has not publicly confirmed Schmidt’s holding.

Eric Schmidt’s Anthropic Stake and Potential IPO Windfall

Anthropic is preparing for a possible IPO before the end of 2026. Some market estimates place its potential valuation as high as $2 trillion.

At that valuation, Schmidt’s reported 1% stake would be worth approximately $20 billion. Bloomberg currently estimates his net worth at $57.5 billion.

The company’s ownership structure is also under scrutiny. In August, Reuters reported that Anthropic was considering special voting rights for its founders ahead of an IPO.

The proposal could give Amodei and other co-founders greater control despite relatively small ownership stakes. TechAmerica.ai previously covered Anthropic’s proposed founder voting structure.

Schmidt has invested actively in technology companies since stepping down as Google’s CEO in 2011. His investment vehicles include Tomorrow Ventures, Innovation Endeavors and family office Hillspire.

His other AI investments include Mistral, General Intuition and Reflection AI. It remains unclear whether Schmidt has sold any Anthropic shares since his initial investment. The company’s final IPO valuation and listing date remain unconfirmed.
