Insurers Say AI Coding Tools Added $942M to Healthcare Costs

Hospitals’ use of artificial intelligence tools when submitting insurance claims added an estimated $942 million to U.S. healthcare spending over two years, according to an analysis by the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association.

BCBSA said it found a sharp rise in patients being coded as having complex medical conditions, but argued that the increase was not matched by evidence of more intensive treatment. The group described a disconnect between how conditions were coded and the care patients actually received.

AI is escalating an old fight over medical bills

Hospitals and insurers have long disputed how treatments are documented and reimbursed, but the growing use of AI on both sides may be intensifying that conflict. The New York Times reported that the BCBSA findings are part of a broader pattern in which AI tools are contributing to higher healthcare costs.

Dr Shiv Rao, founder of healthcare AI company Abridge, warned that widespread automation could lead to “bots fighting bots, agents fighting agents.” However, he also said AI could eventually reduce friction and lower costs.

BCBSA senior vice president Luke Chalker offered a more confrontational assessment, saying insurers are already at a disadvantage as automated systems increasingly shape medical claims and reimbursement.
