Bluesky is expanding the capabilities of its AI assistant Attie, transforming it from a tool for building custom social feeds into a broader research platform for exploring conversations across the open social web.

The company announced this week that it has introduced a new feature called Quests, allowing users to ask Attie open-ended questions about information, trends and news spreading throughout what Bluesky refers to as the “Atmosphere.” The feature searches not only posts on Bluesky itself but also content from applications built on the underlying AT Protocol, giving users a wider view of discussions taking place across the decentralised social network.

The update arrives as Bluesky looks for new ways to expand engagement beyond its core social platform. After rapidly doubling its user base to 40 million registered accounts last October, growth has slowed, with the platform now reporting around 45.6 million registered users. As a result, the company has increasingly focused on developing new products that could attract additional users while creating future revenue opportunities.

Attie evolves beyond custom feeds.

Originally launched in March as a standalone product, Attie enables users to create personalised algorithms and custom social feeds without requiring programming knowledge. Bluesky has also suggested that the assistant could eventually help users vibe-code their own applications. Although the service remains free, the company has previously discussed introducing a paid version in the future.

With Quests, Attie moves beyond feed creation and becomes an AI-powered research assistant. Users can ask questions about trending topics, discover influential accounts within a particular industry or geographic region, and analyse conversations taking place across the broader AT Protocol ecosystem.

According to Bluesky, the goal is to help users make sense of information circulating across decentralised social networks rather than simply surfacing individual posts.

Fighting misinformation through research

Jay Graber, Bluesky’s chief innovation officer and former CEO, said the company sees Attie as a way to help users better understand information online. She described the assistant as a tool designed to combat misinformation and information overload by making it easier for people to conduct their own research across the open web.

Graber said Bluesky believes tools that help people interpret information will ultimately prove more valuable than those that contribute to confusion. She added that Attie is intended to lower the technical barriers associated with using the AT Protocol while giving more users the ability to customise their online experience.

The company is also redesigning Attie with improved accessibility features and a refreshed visual identity, with additional updates planned over the coming months.

Balancing AI ambitions with community expectations

The enhanced Attie experience is currently available in beta, with users being invited gradually through a waitlist over the coming weeks.

Bluesky’s investment in AI comes even though many members of its community have expressed scepticism toward artificial intelligence because of economic, political and environmental concerns. At the same time, the company is under pressure to develop sustainable revenue streams that can support both Bluesky and ongoing development of the AT Protocol.

Earlier this year, Bluesky announced it had raised $100 million in funding in a financing round completed in 2025. The funding provides additional runway to experiment with products such as Attie, explore broader AI capabilities within the Atmosphere, and evaluate future business models including premium subscriptions and advanced tools aimed at power users.
