Microsoft voluntary buyouts offered to about 60,000 employees

Microsoft has introduced a voluntary exit program for approximately 60,000 eligible employees across the United States, Canada, India and the United Kingdom. The initiative offers financial support as the company adjusts staffing amid heavy AI investment.

Microsoft is offering voluntary buyouts to about 60,000 employees across four countries. The program allows eligible workers to leave with financial support as the company adjusts staffing and increases investment in artificial intelligence.

Microsoft confirmed the initiative Monday, Oct. 26, through an employee memo from Chief People Officer Amy Coleman. The Voluntary Exit Offer covers selected teams in the United States, Canada, India and the United Kingdom.

Who Qualifies for Microsoft Voluntary Buyouts?

The program applies to eligible employees at internal level 70 and below within participating organizations. Microsoft said participation depends on business priorities, customer commitments and staffing requirements.

Divisions including Xbox, Windows, Copilot, finance and human resources are participating, according to reports. Some employees working in data centers, sales, marketing and security are excluded. Bloomberg reported that Microsoft expects fewer workers to accept this offer than its earlier retirement program.

Eligible employees began receiving emails Monday explaining their individual packages. The company said participants would receive financial assistance and career planning resources.

The financial terms are expected to resemble Microsoft’s standard severance arrangements. Business Insider reported that employees have until early December to decide, with departures planned for year-end.

Microsoft Adjusts Workforce Amid AI Investment

The buyouts follow earlier workforce reductions as Microsoft redirects resources toward AI products and infrastructure. The company previously announced workforce restructuring involving thousands of positions across its businesses.

Earlier in 2026, Microsoft offered voluntary retirement packages to approximately 8,750 eligible employees. More than 30% accepted, giving the company experience with voluntary departures.

The latest initiative is considerably broader, covering roughly 27% of Microsoft’s global workforce. The company employed approximately 223,000 people at the end of June.

Unlike compulsory layoffs, the new program allows qualifying employees to decide whether to leave. Microsoft has not disclosed a target number of departures or the program’s expected savings.

Coleman described the initiative as another way for business units to respond to changing workforce needs. She also emphasized internal career development and opportunities for employees who remain.

Microsoft continues investing heavily in AI infrastructure while managing expenses across other operations. The company has not announced another voluntary buyout program beyond the current offer.
