The Exploration Company has raised $450 million in a Series C funding round as the European space startup moves forward with plans to develop reusable spacecraft and future launch systems that could provide an alternative to SpaceX.

The company, which operates across Germany, France, Luxembourg, Spain and Italy, described the funding as the largest-ever Series C raised by a European space company. The round comes as demand for orbital launches continues to grow and governments and companies look for additional space infrastructure providers.

Hélène Huby, a former Airbus and ArianeGroup executive, leads The Exploration Company. The company plans to use the new capital to develop reusable spacecraft, expand engineering work and build the foundation for a future European heavy-lift launcher.

The Exploration Company Targets Reusable Spacecraft

TEC’s main near-term focus is Nyx, a reusable spacecraft designed to transport cargo and eventually humans. The company aims to have Nyx dock with the International Space Station and return safely to Earth by November 2028.

The startup has also secured commitments for future missions. According to Atomico, 10 Nyx missions are booked, representing more than $2 billion in contracts and commitments from institutional partners including the European Space Agency and NASA.

Investors backing the Series C round include Atomico, the EQT-managed Scaleup Europe Fund, and Bessemer Venture Partners. The company said the funding will help support additional technology development, including its Storm rocket engine program.

Storm Engine and Future Launch Plans

TEC’s Storm engine program focuses on full-flow stage combustion technology, an advanced rocket engine design aimed at improving efficiency for future reusable launch systems.

The company said it will eventually need more funding to develop larger launch infrastructure, including launch facilities and complete rocket systems. TEC’s long-term goal is to build a reusable European heavy-lift launcher that can support higher-frequency missions.

SpaceX Competition Creates Demand for New Launch Providers

SpaceX has become the dominant commercial launch provider through reusable rocket technology, but growing demand for orbital access has encouraged other companies to develop competing systems.

Reports have raised questions about how SpaceX’s increasing focus on its own satellite projects could affect outside customers that depend on commercial launch services.

Analysts have also examined SpaceX’s growing position in the launch market as more companies attempt to build alternatives.

The company’s expansion of Starlink and future Starship operations have increased attention on the availability of launch capacity for other satellite operators.

SpaceX’s plans for Falcon 9 and Starship have also influenced discussions about the next phase of commercial launch services.

Europe Expands Private Space Capabilities

The Exploration Company is part of a wider European effort to develop private space capabilities. German startup Isar Aerospace recently reached orbit with its Spectrum rocket, marking a milestone for European commercial spaceflight.

Isar Aerospace announced its successful orbital mission, while the company continues developing larger launch vehicles.

Reports have highlighted Isar’s progress as part of Europe’s expanding commercial rocket industry.

TEC believes future demand from satellite networks, communications infrastructure and other space applications will require larger rockets and more frequent launches.

The company’s latest funding round strengthens its position among private space companies seeking to build reusable systems and reduce reliance on a small number of launch providers.
