The a16z Frontier rebrand marks a broader investment strategy for Andreessen Horowitz, which has renamed its cryptocurrency division to pursue opportunities in artificial intelligence, robotics and emerging technologies. The venture capital firm announced the change on Oct. 22.
Previously known as a16z Crypto, the division has raised nearly $10 billion across five funds since launching in 2018. Its investments include major blockchain companies such as Coinbase, Solana and Uniswap.
a16z Frontier Rebrand Expands Beyond Blockchain
Managing partner Chris Dixon explained the shift in an official announcement, emphasizing investments in technologies that could create entirely new markets.
The expanded strategy covers AI-powered products, autonomous machines, and networks that connect people with intelligent systems. Blockchain remains part of the investment mandate, particularly for financial infrastructure and machine-to-machine transactions.
The move follows AndreessenHorowitz’s broader efforts to diversify its technology investments. The firm previously launched a separate $1.1 billion Machine Age fund targeting AI hardware, semiconductors, robotics and computing infrastructure.
Dixon will continue leading Frontier alongside general partners Eddy Lazzarin and Guy Wuollet, with support from firm founders Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz.
Meanwhile, Ali Yahya, who joined the crypto investment strategy in 2017, has left the company, according to The Information.
The name change reflects a wider investment focus rather than an exit from cryptocurrency. Andreessen Horowitz says it will continue supporting blockchain startups and advocating for crypto regulation while pursuing emerging technologies.
