Google Signs 396 MW Geothermal Power Deal With Fervo for AI Data Centre
Google will buy 396 MW of geothermal power from Fervo’s Utah project to support a new data centre and expand clean energy use.
Google has agreed to purchase 396 megawatts of electricity from Fervo’s Cape Station project in Utah, a geothermal energy company, securing power for a planned data centre while expanding its clean energy strategy.
The power purchase agreement between Google and Fervo will provide electricity from the geothermal facility, which is expected to begin operations in 2028. Google also has the option to purchase an additional 600 megawatts through June 2030.
The agreement comes as technology companies seek new electricity sources to meet growing data centre demand driven by artificial intelligence workloads. Google has invested heavily in renewable energy projects as part of its goal to operate on carbon-free energy by 2030.
Fervo expands enhanced geothermal energy capacity.
Fervo’s Cape Station project uses enhanced geothermal technology to access deeper underground heat sources and generate electricity. Google has previously worked with Fervo on geothermal energy development, including purchasing some of the company’s early electricity output.
Fervo is permitted to develop up to 2 gigawatts of geothermal power at Cape Station. The company has said the site may have enough underground heat capacity to support significantly more generation if fully developed.
The U.S. geothermal market has received increased attention as enhanced geothermal systems expand the potential locations where geothermal electricity can be produced.
The deal also highlights the challenge facing large technology companies as they balance rising electricity demand with climate commitments. Google has continued to add renewable energy sources, while also securing additional power supplies to support its expanding infrastructure needs.
Enhanced geothermal projects are still an emerging technology, but companies like Fervo are working to make geothermal power available at a larger scale.
