OpenAI plans to merge the ChatGPT Chat and Work tabs into a single experience, allowing users to move between conversations and complex tasks without switching modes. The company disclosed the upcoming change in an email to subscribers.
The update aims to simplify navigation in the ChatGPT desktop app, which currently separates Chat, Work, and Codex. OpenAI will initially test the combined experience with a small group of users before expanding access.
ChatGPT to Offer Unified Experience
The redesigned interface will let users start with a conversation and move directly into more demanding projects. They can upload files, connect plugins, create presentations, build websites and complete tasks on the web.
Users can also review progress and guide ChatGPT while it works. OpenAI previously expanded its desktop AI capabilities with voice controls for agents and computer-based tasks.
Codex, OpenAI’s dedicated software development tool, will remain a separate experience within the desktop application.
ChatGPT and Codex Will Share Usage Allowances
Alongside the interface changes, OpenAI plans to combine ChatGPT and Codex usage into a shared token allowance. Both services will draw from the same pool instead of operating under separate limits.
OpenAI expects most subscribers to see little difference. However, users running demanding models or frequent complex tasks may exhaust their allowances sooner and need to wait for resets.
The company has not announced a specific date for the wider rollout. Rival Anthropic introduced a similar unified experience for Claude’s chat and Cowork features in September.
