TikTok permanently suspended the Musk documentary ad account for promoting filmmaker Alex Gibney’s four-hour film about Elon Musk. The decision comes as distributor Bleecker Street expands the documentary’s theatrical release across North America.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, TikTok notified Bleecker Street on October 16 that the account had violated its political-content policies. The account had attracted more than 10,000 followers before TikTok removed it. Bleecker Street is appealing the decision, while TikTok has not specified which promotional materials triggered the ban.
Musk Documentary Advertising Faces Wider Platform Restrictions
Meta and YouTube previously rejected promotional material for “Musk”, then reversed their decisions. Meta attributed its initial rejection to an error, as TechAmerica.ai previously reported.
X, which Musk owns, has also declined to carry advertisements for the documentary. The film examines the billionaire’s business career, personal life and political influence.
Gibney acknowledged in an interview with The New York Times that Universal Pictures had reconsidered its international release plans. The distributor ultimately decided to proceed.
“Musk” opened in four theatres on October 9 before expanding to 472 North American locations on October 16. HBO plans to stream it in 2027.
The advertising restrictions complicate the documentary’s promotion during its wider theatrical rollout. Bleecker Street’s appeal remains unresolved as the film reaches additional audiences.
