LinkedIn Adds New Tools to Fight Fake Profiles and Work History Claims
LinkedIn introduces new verification tools that help users confirm work history and help companies remove false employment claims.
LinkedIn is introducing new tools designed to reduce fake profiles, false employment claims, and identity-related abuse on its professional networking platform. The company says the changes will help members verify professional relationships and give businesses more control over how their brands appear on LinkedIn.
The move comes as creating fake identities has become easier with artificial intelligence tools. Experts have raised concerns about how AI can make synthetic identities and impersonation attempts harder to detect.
Members Can Vouch for Professional Experience
One new feature allows LinkedIn members to confirm that another person actually worked with them or attended the same school during a claimed period. The feature is designed as a verification signal, not a recommendation or endorsement.
LinkedIn said the system includes safeguards to reduce misuse. Members verifying must have a verified profile, have been connected for at least one year, and use security protections such as two-factor authentication.
Companies Gain More Control Over False Employment Claims
LinkedIn is also expanding tools that allow company page administrators to remove profiles that falsely claim employment with their organisation. The company is testing additional controls that could require workplace verification, such as confirmation through a company email address.
Removing a profile from a company page will not change the user’s LinkedIn account. However, the profile will no longer show a clickable connection to that company page or display the work experience as verified.
Broader Push for Digital Identity Verification
LinkedIn said its existing verification tools have been used by more than 115 million members and over 700,000 companies. The company is also expanding partnerships that allow users to display verified identities outside LinkedIn.
The platform will add partners including Truecaller and PeerSpot to existing verification integrations with companies such as Adobe and UserTesting. The growth of synthetic identity fraud has increased attention around stronger identity verification systems.
LinkedIn said verified members have seen higher engagement on average, including more post views and impressions, than non-verified profiles. The company says the new features are meant to give users more context when evaluating professional identities online.
