Norway Considers Ban on Camera-Enabled Smart Glasses Over Privacy Concerns

Norway is considering restrictions on camera-enabled smart glasses and other wearable devices as officials examine privacy concerns linked to recording, surveillance and facial recognition technology.

Digital Minister Karianne Tung said the government is reviewing rules for camera-equipped wearables made by companies such as Meta and Snap. She said artificial intelligence is increasingly being combined with cameras and microphones built into everyday devices, including glasses and headphones.

Tung said Norway wants to prevent these devices from being used to monitor people in public spaces. Possible measures could include restrictions on the use of facial recognition in public areas.

Camera-enabled wearables have faced criticism from privacy advocates who argue that the devices could record people without their knowledge. Concerns have increased as companies explore adding more advanced AI features, including facial recognition.

Meta’s smart glasses have also faced scrutiny over facial recognition capabilities and how wearable cameras could affect privacy.

Tung said the government will create an expert group to advise on stronger privacy protections as AI-powered wearable technology becomes more common.
