Tolan AI companion startup raises $30M to expand

Tolan has raised $30 million from Union Square Ventures, Khosla Ventures and Homebrew to expand its AI companion app. The startup reports more than 250,000 active users, over 70 million conversations, and double-digit millions in annual recurring revenue.

The Tolan AI companion has secured $30 million in new funding as the startup expands its personalized assistant for everyday tasks and emotional support. The investment doubles its total funding and follows growing demand for conversational AI products.

Union Square Ventures, Khosla Ventures and Homebrew participated in the round, according to Upstarts Media. Tolan did not disclose its latest valuation, although PitchBook estimates it exceeds $268 million, with medium confidence. Its previous valuation was approximately $120 million.

Tolan’s AI Companion Attracts 250,000 Active Users

The Tolan app lets users interact with customizable animated characters that offer conversational support, help organize tasks and discuss personal goals. The company generates revenue through tiered subscriptions that unlock additional features.

Tolan reports more than 250,000 active users and over 70 million conversations during the past year. The startup says annual recurring revenue has reached the double-digit millions. Around 70% of users are women, while 40% are parents.

The app has also attracted interest from neurodivergent users seeking help with organization and everyday challenges. In a Reddit discussion, users described finding its reminders and conversations helpful. These personal experiences do not establish clinical benefits.

AI Companion Market Faces Competition and Safety Concerns

Tolan operates in a market where consumer reactions vary considerably. The wearable AI companion Friend faced criticism on Hacker News and attracted skeptical coverage from The New York Times. A recent Wired review also questioned the usefulness of its second-generation device.

Other companies have struggled commercially. Character.AI recently filed for bankruptcy, with Disney agreeing to acquire certain assets and offer jobs to much of its workforce.

Tolan also faces competition from emerging AI agents that can plan and complete tasks rather than converse. Meta’s Muse, which features a customizable avatar, represents another approach to combining companionship with practical assistance.

Safety remains a major concern for AI companions that offer emotional support. Lawsuits against chatbot developers have raised questions about harmful interactions and emotional dependency. As it expands, Tolan will need to balance user engagement with appropriate safeguards.
