The God of War Laufey delay has pushed Sony’s upcoming PlayStation 5 exclusive into May 2027. Santa Monica Studio announced the change on November 4, moving the release from February 16 to May 20. The developer says it needs additional time to complete the game and refine the experience.
The decision gives the studio roughly three more months of development. It also changes Sony’s early 2027 release schedule. However, the company has not identified specific technical problems or explained which parts of the game require additional work.
God of War Laufey Delay Moves Release to May 20
Santa Monica Studio confirmed the revised launch date in a public statement. The developer thanked players for their enthusiasm since the game’s June announcement.
According to Gematsu’s report, the team plans to use the extra development time for final improvements. The studio also promised further updates but did not announce when they would arrive.
The postponement affects the entire PlayStation 5 release. Sony has not announced PC or other console versions. The game remains a PS5 exclusive.
The studio’s explanation leaves several questions unanswered. It has not disclosed whether the extra time is for performance, combat balancing, animation, or other development priorities.
There is also no verified evidence of a major production problem. The announcement sets a revised schedule, not the reason behind every development decision.
God of War Laufey Puts Faye in the Lead
God of War Laufey represents a significant change for the long-running franchise. Instead of following Kratos, players will control his wife, Faye, also known as Laufey.
The story begins after Faye’s death, a defining event in God of War (2018). She awakens in the Everywhen, a mysterious afterlife inhabited by gods and creatures from different mythologies.
Faye discovers that her plans to protect Kratos and their son Atreus are threatened. Her journey involves confronting powerful enemies as she searches for a way home.
In its official gameplay introduction, Santa Monica Studio described the Everywhen as a realm where different mythologies intersect. The setting expands the series beyond its familiar Norse environments.
Deborah Ann Woll reprises her role as Faye after appearing in God of War Ragnarök. Jack Quaid voices Phranque, a cosmic cube who accompanies her. Perlina Lau plays Rue, an enchanted ribbon guardian connected to Faye’s sword.
The new protagonist lets the studio explore a familiar character from a new perspective. However, the complete story remains undisclosed ahead of launch.
Faye’s Combat Introduces Faster Movement and New Weapons
The upcoming game also changes how players approach combat. Santa Monica Studio has emphasized Faye’s agility, speed and ability to move between ground and aerial attacks.
Her fighting style combines elements of the modern God of War combat system with movement inspired by the earlier Greek-era games. The developer intends to preserve the franchise’s emphasis on powerful melee attacks.
Faye can wield a magical sword and use special abilities associated with the Jötnar. One technique allows her to separate an enemy’s soul from its body. She can then attack or manipulate that soul during combat.
The studio has also introduced the Serpent Bow, which supports different attack styles. Its September gameplay update detailed precision aiming, mobile hip-fire attacks and several arrow types.
These mechanics suggest a faster combat rhythm than Kratos’ traditionally heavier fighting style. However, the available demonstrations do not establish how combat will perform across the complete game.
The delay could give developers more opportunities to refine these systems. Santa Monica Studio has not confirmed that combat improvements specifically prompted the postponement.
Preorders and Collector Box Plans Remain Unclear
Sony opened God of War Laufey preorders on September 29, 2026. Players can choose between the Standard Edition and Digital Deluxe Edition.
The Digital Deluxe Edition includes additional cosmetic items, in-game resources, a digital artbook and the official soundtrack. Preorder bonuses include the Last Wish Armor Set and a special Phranque appearance.
Sony also announced a limited Collector Box on October 13. The package includes a light-up Faye statue, an oracle deck and a physical mini artbook. The game itself is sold separately.
The Collector Box carries a suggested retail price of $149.99 in the United States. Sony originally scheduled it to be available on February 16, 2027.
However, Santa Monica Studio has not clarified whether the Collector Box will ship on that original date. Sony’ss official game page also still displayed the earlier February release information when checked November 5.
The developer’s November 4 announcement establishes May 20 as the new game release date. Customers with existing preorders should check PlayStation communications for updated delivery and availability details.
What the Delay Means for Sony’s 2027 Game Schedule
The postponement removes God of War Laufey from Sony’s February launch calendar. It also pushes a major first-party release later into spring.
Release schedules matter because publishers coordinate marketing, distribution and promotional campaigns around specific dates. Changes can affect retailers, advertising plans and players who have already made purchasing decisions.
The wider industry has seen other significant release changes. TechAmerica.ai previously covered Forza Horizon 6’s delayed PS5 launch, which moved the racing game into January 2027.
However, the circumstances differ between projects. Forza Horizon 6 involves a PlayStation conversion, while Laufey is a first-party Sony production. Neither delay causes the other.
Major game development also involves considerable financial pressure. TechAmerica.ai has examined rising costs in blockbuster game development, including production budgets and industry restructuring.
Those broader pressures provide context but do not explain Laufey’s postponement. Sony has not connected this decision to financial difficulties, staffing changes or cost reductions.
What Players Should Expect Before May 2027
God of War Laufey remains scheduled for May 20, 2027, on PlayStation 5. Santa Monica Studio has promised additional information before launch but has not provided a specific announcement schedule.
The extra development time may help the team deliver a more polished experience. However, a later release date does not automatically guarantee improved performance or fewer technical problems.
Players can currently evaluate the game through Sony’s published trailers and gameplay demonstrations. Those materials establish its setting, characters and intended combat style without revealing the complete experience.
The central attraction remains Faye’s first major playable adventure. Her story offers an opportunity to expand the God of War universe while retaining its established characters and mythology.
For now, May 20 is the date that matters. Whether the extra development time yields meaningful improvements will become clearer when Santa Monica Studio shares more gameplay and release details.
