The Archive of Our Own outage could last up to four weeks after the popular fan fiction website went offline for routine overnight maintenance. The platform, commonly known as AO3, initially expected a much shorter interruption.
According to its status page, AO3 estimates it will take about two weeks to restore service, though the process could take up to four weeks. The organization hopes to bring the website back with limited functionality sooner.
Archive of Our Own Outage Sparks Fan Reactions
The Organization for Transformative Works (OTW), a nonprofit that relies on volunteers and donations, operates AO3. The website lets fans publish and read stories about their favorite fictional characters and worlds.
The extended outage announcement quickly attracted widespread attention. Updates posted on Bluesky and X drew millions of views within hours, with many users worried about losing access to their favorite stories.
Is the AO3 Outage Related to PHP Security Flaws?
The disruption follows the recent discovery of two critical vulnerabilities in PHP, a programming language widely used to power websites. According to W3Techs, PHP powers about 70% of websites.
However, AO3 runs on Ruby on Rails rather than PHP, making a connection to those vulnerabilities unlikely. The organization has not publicly confirmed the technical cause of the extended outage or provided an exact restoration date.
