Restate Raises $20 Million Series A to Build Durable Infrastructure for AI Agents

Restate, a Berlin-based startup building durable workflow infrastructure, has raised $20 million in Series A funding as demand grows for reliable systems that can support complex AI agent processes.

Singular led the round, with participation from Redpoint Ventures and Capital One Ventures. Restate plans to use the funding to expand its engineering team, build its go-to-market operations, and grow its presence in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Infrastructure Built for Reliable AI Workflows

Founded in 2022, Restate originally focused on making multi-step software workflows more resilient to crashes and network failures. The company later found its technology aligned with the growing needs of AI agents, which often require longer and less predictable processes.

Restate’s platform tracks workflow execution, recovers from failures, and help ensure consistent outcomes when processes are interrupted.

Competing in the Durable Infrastructure Market

The company said it has recently secured multiple large customer contracts as interest in AI agent infrastructure increases. Its customers include companies such as Replit and Fortune 500 businesses, including organisations in financial services.

Unlike many durable execution systems that rely on external databases, Restate built its own storage, replication, and redundancy layers. The company says this approach keeps its system lightweight and fast.

Restate will compete with established players in the durable infrastructure market as companies look for more reliable ways to deploy AI agents and automated workflows.

Stephan Ewen, Igal Shilman, and Till Rohrmann founded the company; they previously worked together at Data Artisans and Ververica. Ewen also co-created the open-source stream-processing framework, Apache Flink.
