Fusion energy startups are gaining attention from utilities as power companies look for new sources of reliable electricity to meet future demand. The latest example is Realta Fusion’s partnership with Madison Gas and Electric, which aims to explore the development of a grid-connected fusion power plant in Wisconsin.

The agreement highlights a growing trend of utilities working with fusion companies earlier in the development process. For startups, these partnerships can provide access to engineering support, potential sites, permitting guidance, and grid connections. Utilities, meanwhile, gain early involvement with a technology that could reshape future power generation.

Realta Fusion plans a 200-megawatt power plant

Realta Fusion and Madison Gas and Electric are exploring a 200-megawatt fusion power plant that could be built in the mid-2030s. The utility has also made an equity investment in the startup, although financial details were not disclosed.

Realta is currently converting a former Oscar Mayer factory in Madison into a research and development facility. Through the partnership, the company will also gain access to potential interconnection sites and technical assistance needed for future deployment.

Utilities have historically approached fusion cautiously because commercial fusion power has remained elusive despite decades of research. Recent progress by fusion companies, combined with rising electricity demand from areas such as AI data centres, has increased interest in the technology.

Fusion startups compete for utility partnerships

Fusion power is attracting utilities because it is designed to provide continuous electricity without relying on fossil fuels. Unlike wind and solar projects, which depend on weather conditions, fusion plants are being developed as potential sources of constant power for the grid.

Several other fusion companies have also secured utility partnerships. Commonwealth Fusion Systems is working with Dominion Energy on its Arc power plant project in Virginia, while Helion is developing its Polaris facility with support from the Chelan County Public Utility District in Washington. Helion’s project is connected to a power agreement involving Microsoft.

Type One Energy is planning its Infinity Two fusion power plant in partnership with the Tennessee Valley Authority, at a former coal plant site in Tennessee. The companies announced their collaboration to accelerate fusion commercialisation.

In Europe, Proxima Fusion is working with RWE and other partners on plans for a commercial fusion power plant in Germany. The project is planned at a former power plant site in Bavaria.

For fusion startups, utility partnerships provide access to resources that can reduce some of the challenges of building large-scale energy projects. For utilities, the technology remains a long-term investment, but securing future power sources has become an increasingly important priority.
