Anthropic public benefit fund gets 5% share pledge

Anthropic plans to dedicate 5% of its shares to a new public benefit fund, pending shareholder approval. The fund could expand as the company's valuation rises, supporting nonprofits, direct financial assistance, and responses to AI-driven economic disruption.

The Anthropic public benefit fund will receive 5% of the AI company's shares, subject to stockholder approval. The initiative aims to support projects addressing AI's social and economic effects, with potential funding increases as Anthropic's valuation grows.

In its October 18 announcement, Anthropic said its board could allocate another 2% of shares for every 50% increase in company valuation above a set baseline.

How Anthropic's New Fund Will Work

The fund will operate as a wholly owned limited liability company (LLC) within Anthropic, rather than an independent nonprofit. This structure gives the company flexibility to support charitable organizations and make direct payments to selected populations.

AI-related job disruption is one potential priority. Anthropic has already committed $200 million to economic research examining employment changes and possible support programs. Its recent workforce study also documented declining hiring for junior technical roles and shifting employee responsibilities.

The announcement comes amid growing public skepticism toward AI companies. CEO Dario Amodei has previously described the backlash as a broader crisis of trust.

Anthropic said existing founder and employee commitments, combined with the new fund, would dedicate roughly 20% of company shares to public benefit. Shares held by the fund cannot be used for political contributions or lobbying.

Details about oversight, funding decisions, and valuation milestones remain undisclosed. Anthropic plans to provide more information about the fund's governance in the coming months.
