Mobileye CEO Amnon Shashua to Step Down as Company Expands Into Robotaxis

Mobileye founder and CEO Amnon Shashua plans to step down from the company’s top leadership role after nearly three decades, marking the end of an era as the autonomous driving company expands into robotaxis and humanoid robotics.

According to a regulatory filing released Thursday, Shashua will remain CEO until Mobileye appoints a successor.

Shashua founded Mobileye based on his computer vision research at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The company grew into one of the world’s leading suppliers of chips and software that power advanced driver-assistance systems and automotive safety features.

Mobileye became the largest initial public offering in Israel’s history before Intel acquired the company for $15.3 billion in 2017. Intel later returned Mobileye to the public markets in 2022 while remaining its largest shareholder.

Under Shashua’s leadership, Mobileye expanded beyond supplying technology to automakers by developing its own autonomous driving systems. Those systems are now used by Volkswagen and its mobility subsidiary, MOIA.

The company’s ambitions have recently broadened further. In January, Mobileye acquired Mentee Robotics, a humanoid robotics startup founded by Shashua, in a deal valued at $900 million. At the time, he described the acquisition as part of “Mobileye 3.0,” the company’s next phase focused on robotics and automotive artificial intelligence.

Last month, Mobileye also announced plans to move beyond supplying autonomous driving technology by launching its own robotaxi service in a U.S. city in 2027, signalling its push to operate autonomous mobility services alongside its existing automotive business.
