X has officially released a completely rebuilt version of its Android application following nearly a year of engineering work aimed at addressing long-standing performance issues. The Elon Musk-owned social media platform says the new app has been developed from the ground up and delivers faster performance, smoother navigation and a stronger foundation for future features.

The redesigned Android app is now available through the Google Play Store. According to X, users should notice improvements across key areas including loading times, scrolling responsiveness, notifications and overall reliability. Rather than updating the existing application, the company chose to replace it with an entirely new version built from scratch.

Year-long engineering effort focused on Android.

The Android overhaul was first announced nearly a year ago after X acknowledged that its Android experience had fallen behind its iOS app. In August last year, X Head of Product Nikita Bier revealed that the company had assembled what he described as an Android“dream team” to rebuild the application and improve the platform’s performance.

Later in the year, Bier highlighted that October had become one of X’s strongest months for Android downloads, reinforcing the importance of delivering a significantly improved mobile experience. The growing Android user base made the redevelopment a strategic priority for the company.

With the release now complete, Bier described the project as one of the largest engineering initiatives in X’s history. He said rebuilding the application from scratch would not only improve the current user experience but also allow developers to introduce new features much more quickly in the future.

New foundation supports future X features.

According to the company, the new Android architecture is designed to accelerate feature development as X continues expanding beyond traditional social networking. Recent launches such as X Money and X Chat, both released as standalone applications, demonstrate thecompany’ss broader ambitions to transform the platform into a multi-service ecosystem.

The improved Android application could also help X attract more users in international markets, where Android devices account for the majority of smartphone sales. The platform has faced criticism in recent years for neglecting Android, with technical issues at one point preventing users from opening X posts through shared links.

More Android improvements are still on the way.

Despite the major redesign, X acknowledges that additional work remains. Bier said the company is continuing to optimise performance for older Android devices while also adding support for Spaces, the platform’s live audio feature, which is not yet available in the rebuilt app.

The company is also preparing to bring several newer features to Android in future updates, including the video editor, react-with-video functionality, cashtags and custom timelines. Existing Android users can access the redesigned experience by updating the X application through the Google Play Store.
