Google Classroom Introduces Gemini Tool That Turns Lessons Into Podcast-Style Audio

Google has rolled out a new feature in Google Classroom designed to engage students who prefer learning through audio. The update enables teachers to use Gemini to convert lesson materials into podcast-style audio episodes to improve student comprehension.

Teachers can access the feature by opening the Gemini tab inside Google Classroom. From there, educators can tailor the audio lessons by selecting the appropriate grade level, identifying subject matter, and defining learning goals. Additional customisation of options allows teachers to choose how many speakers appear in the audio and to set the conversational tone, including interview formats, roundtable discussions, or more informal dialogue styles.

The podcast-generation tool is currently available to users on Google Workspace Education Fundamentals, Standard, and Premium plans.

Google says the feature is designed to meet students where they already are. Podcast listening is especially popular among younger audiences, with research estimating around 35 million Gen Z listeners in the United States tuning in monthly. Educational podcasts have also gained traction in higher education, with many universities producing their own series and students increasingly consuming on-demand learning content.

By offering lessons in audio form, teachers may also encourage independent study. Students can replay podcast episodes whenever they need clarification, review material, or catch up after missing class.

At the same time, educators continue to navigate challenges around the use of AI in schools. Many teachers have raised concerns about students becoming overly dependent on generative AI tools, including services like ChatGPT, to complete coursework.

Google has emphasised the importance of responsible AI use, advising teachers to carefully review and edit AI-generated content to ensure it is accurate, appropriate, and aligned with classroom needs and local education policies.

Gemini for Classroom was first introduced in 2024, and Google has steadily expanded its capabilities. Most recently, the company released significant updates last June, adding tools to help teachers brainstorm ideas, build lesson plans, and customise instructional materials for diverse learning environments.
