Grubhub waives delivery and service fees on restaurant orders over $50

Grubhub is making an aggressive push to narrow the gap with rivals DoorDash and Uber Eats as competition in the food delivery market intensifies.

On Monday, the company revealed both its Super Bowl 2026 television commercial and a significant update to its pricing strategy. In the coming weeks, Grubhub will permanently waive all delivery and service fees on restaurant orders totalling more than $50. The move could deliver meaningful savings for customers and make the platform more attractive in a crowded, price-sensitive marketplace.

The new Super Bowl ad features actor George Clooney at an opulent dinner party. As the host theatrically asks, “Who will eat the fees?” Clooney delivers the punchline: “Grubhub will eat the fees.”

According to the company, the fee waiver is a long-term initiative designed to help consumers keep more money in their pockets amid ongoing economic pressure. Grubhub notes that delivery and service fees on orders exceeding $50 typically average around $13 per transaction across most food delivery platforms.

Grubhub’s decision to permanently eliminate fees on all orders over $50 is unusual within the industry. Neither DoorDash nor Uber Eats currently offers an ongoing waiver of delivery and service fees for large orders. Instead, competing platforms tend to rely on temporary promotions or paid subscription programs, such as DashPass or Uber One, which often apply only to specific restaurants or come with additional limitations.

The announcement also comes as Grubhub continues to grapple with slower user growth compared to its rivals. The company, which was acquired by Wonder Group founder Marc Lore in 2024, saw a 20% year-over-year decline in monthly active users in 2025, to 8 million, according to Sensor Tower data. By comparison, DoorDash reports nearly 50 million monthly active users.

Beyond the new pricing policy, Grubhub has also been expanding its offerings through acquisitions. The company recently acquired Claim, a startup that provides cash-back rewards at local restaurants. Customers can redeem those rewards for dine-in or pickup orders. Through Claim, Grubhub aims to help restaurants strengthen customer relationships by offering more personalised and targeted rewards programs.
