Google Maps now lets you access Gemini while walking and cycling

Google announced on Thursday that users of Google Maps can now access Gemini hands-free while walking and cycling. The update follows the Gemini-powered hands-free, conversational driving experience that Google Maps introduced a few months ago.

The move is part of Google’s broader push to integrate Gemini more deeply into everyday products and to transform Google Maps from a static navigation tool into a real-time, conversational assistant.

When navigating on foot, users can now ask Gemini questions such as “Tell me more about the neighborhood I’m in,” “What are some must-see attractions?” or “Are there cafes with a bathroom along my route?” Google said the feature is designed for situations where walking and typing at the same time is inconvenient, allowing users to get information without stopping or leaving the navigation screen.

For cyclists, Gemini can also be accessed hands-free, allowing riders to stay focused on the road. Users can ask questions like “What’s my ETA?” or “When’s my next meeting?” They can also issue commands such as “Text Emily I’m 10 minutes behind,” enabling communication without taking their hands off the handlebars.

The feature supports multi-turn conversations, meaning users can ask follow-up questions within the same interaction. For example, someone could ask, “Is there a budget-friendly restaurant with vegan options along my route, something within a couple of miles?” and then follow up with, “What’s parking like there?”

Google said the update is now available worldwide on iOS in regions where Gemini is supported, and it is rolling out to Android users.

The announcement builds on a series of recent Google Maps updates. Google recently introduced a Gemini-powered “know before you go” tips sectiontthathighlightsprpractical details about places users are interested in, such as the best way to book reservations, possible secret menu items, or recommended parking options. The app has also added an improved Explore tab to surface trending nearby spots more quickly, along with a new EV charger availability prediction feature that estimates how many chargers will be available when users arrive.

Thursday’s update comes just a day after Google rolled out deeper Gemini integration in Google Chrome, including a persistent Gemini sidebar and a new “auto-browse” feature that can complete tasks across websites. Those changes are part of Google’s effort to compete with AI-powered browsers from companies such as OpenAI, Perplexity, Opera, and The Browser Company.
