Roblox Unveils New Short-Form Video Feed, AI Tools for Creators, and Increased Earnings for Developers

At the Roblox Developers Conference, the renowned online gaming platform Roblox revealed a series of groundbreaking updates. The platform is launching a new TikTok-like short-form video feed, introducing increased earnings for creators, and rolling out advanced AI tools aimed at boosting creation.

Introducing Roblox Moments: A Short-Form Video Experience

The new short-form video feature, named "Roblox Moments," allows users aged 13 and older to capture and share gameplay moments with the world. Players can trim clips to 30 seconds, add music, write descriptions, and share their experiences on a scrollable feed. Just like TikTok, users can browse through the feed of gameplay clips, react to the videos using emojis, and even jump directly into the game or experience from the video.

The feature is currently in beta, with a gradual rollout to ensure moderation is optimized for age-appropriate content. Roblox has also implemented a robust reporting system, allowing users to flag inappropriate content.

AI-Powered Creation Tools for Developers

Roblox is also rolling out advanced AI tools designed to offer creators greater artistic freedom and enhance functionality within the platform. One of the most notable features is the ability to generate fully functional 3D objects, starting with vehicles and weapons. For example, if a creator prompts the AI with “a sleek, futuristic red sports car,” Roblox will generate an interactive car that players can drive, which creators can further customize, such as making the car doors open.

In addition, Roblox’s new real-time voice chat translation capability will allow players to communicate seamlessly in different languages. This feature, launching next year, will instantly translate voice chat from English, Spanish, French, and German, making interactions between players from different countries more accessible.

Roblox is also introducing text-to-speech and speech-to-text APIs for creators. These tools will allow for narration, character dialogue, and voice-driven commands, making in-game experiences more immersive and interactive. For instance, an NPC can now give instructions in a customizable voice, and players can issue commands like “Fire!” to trigger in-game actions.

Boosting Creator Earnings

To further empower creators, Roblox is increasing its DevEx (Developer Exchange) rate. This change allows creators to earn more when converting Robux into real currency. Now, 100,000 earned Robux will equal $380, up from $350, providing a 8.5% increase in creator earnings. This change reflects Roblox’s commitment to fostering a thriving creator economy. For context, the average revenue of the top 1000 developers on the platform has almost tripled since 2020, with nearly $1 million in earnings.

Enhanced Performance and New Features

On the performance front, Roblox is introducing a Server Authority mode that reduces in-game cheating and enhances in-game physics interactions. The platform is also improving avatar movements to make them more lifelike, including realistic running, climbing, and vaulting over obstacles. Furthermore, Roblox avatars will soon have more natural momentum and be able to interact with objects more dynamically, such as grasping items with their fingers.

To improve the experience across all devices, Roblox is introducing updates that will allow the platform to run at a higher fidelity without sacrificing performance or requiring additional work from creators.

Age-Estimation and Safety Measures

In addition to these new features, Roblox has expanded its age-estimation technology to all users, and it is partnering with the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC) to implement age and content ratings for games and apps on its platform. This initiative is part of Roblox’s ongoing effort to address child safety concerns amid a series of legal challenges.
