Meta tests a stand-alone app for its AI-generated ‘Vibes’ videos
Meta is testing a separate app for AI-generated “Vibes” videos, signalling a deeper push into short-form, AI-created content beyond its core social platforms.
Meta is testing a standalone app for Vibes, the company confirmed on Thursday. First introduced last September, Vibes allows users to create and share short-form, AI-generated videos and browse a dedicated feed featuring AI-generated videos from other users.
The experience is similar to TikTok or Instagram Reels, with one key distinction: every video in the feed is generated using artificial intelligence. Until now, the Vibes feed has been available only within the Meta AI app. By testing Vibes as a standalone app, Meta is positioning the product as a more direct competitor to OpenAI’s Sora, the AI-generated video and social app that launched shortly after Vibes.
“Following the strong early traction of Vibes within Meta AI, we are testing a standalone app to build on that momentum,” Meta said in an emailed statement. “We’ve seen that users are increasingly leaning into the format to create, discover, and share AI-generated video with friends. This standalone app provides a dedicated home for that experience, offering users a more focused, immersive environment. We will look to expand the app further based on what we learn from the community.”
Platformer first reported the development.
Meta said it does not share specific usage figures, but noted that Vibes has performed well so far. According to the company, usage of Meta AI has continued to grow steadily since Vibes launched, which Meta views as evidence of demand for a dedicated, standalone Vibes app.
The company also noted that while users currently engage with AI-generated content within Meta AI, a separate app provides a more focused environment for both content creation and interaction.
Vibes allows users to generate videos from scratch or remix videos they encounter in their feed. Before publishing, creators can add new visuals, layer in music, and adjust different stylistic elements. Once finished, videos can be posted directly to the Vibes feed, sent to others via direct messages, or cross-posted to Facebook and Instagram Stories and Reels.
Meta reports that collaboration and sharing within Vibes are increasing, with many videos shared privately with friends. The company noted that this behaviour closely mirrors how people already use Reels across its platforms.
It is also worth noting that Meta told last week that, alongside testing new premium subscriptions across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, it plans to explore subscription offerings for AI-powered features, including Vibes.
Although Vibes has been free to use since its launch, Meta plans to introduce a freemium model for AI video creation. Under this approach, users would have free access to basic video creation tools, with the option to subscribe to unlock additional video generation opportunities each month. Meta said it plans to begin testing these subscription options in the coming months.
