Cash App adds payment links so you can get paid in a DM
Cash App introduces shareable payment links, allowing users to request and receive money directly through DMs, texts, and social media conversations.
Using Cash App has long been straightforward, but the platform is aiming to simplify the experience further. On Wednesday, Block, Inc.'s payments service introduced a new tool, payment links, designed to streamline how users request and receive money.
The new feature enables customers to generate a unique hyperlink that can be shared across various communication channels to request payment. Rather than relying solely on in-app recipient selection, users can now send a payment request via a link in a text message, email, or direct message.
To create a payment link, users follow the usual process within the app's payment tab. However, instead of tapping "add recipient," they can now select "share link." Once chosen, Cash App generates a link that can be copied and pasted into external communications. When the recipient opens the link, the requested payment amount is already prefilled, allowing the transaction to be completed quickly and efficiently.
According to Cash App, payment links are not limited to one-time transfers. They can also be used for recurring payments and group contributions, expanding their utility across a range of everyday financial interactions.
The company says the feature was developed after research into Gen Z users revealed that conversations about payments often span multiple communication platforms. By introducing payment links, Cash App aims to reduce the social discomfort that can arise when requesting money and to make the process more direct and flexible.
"Payment links make moving money even more seamless, but just as importantly, they make the task of requesting money feel more human and less awkward," said Kristen Anderson, P2P & Networks Product Lead at Cash App. "We've heard from our customers that sending in-app payment requests and push notifications can sometimes come across as overly formal or even passive-aggressive. Payment links solve this by allowing customers to send requests through whichever platform feels most natural so that they can add context, levity, or humour to the conversation."
The rollout of payment links follows several other recent additions to the platform. These include an AI-powered chatbot introduced late last year to provide financial guidance and a new benefits program that offers users access to higher borrowing limits.
