China’s Salt Typhoon hackers broke into Norwegian companies
China-linked Salt Typhoon hackers breached several Norwegian companies, underscoring growing concerns over state-backed cyber espionage targeting critical infrastructure and businesses in Europe.
The Norwegian government has accused the China-backed hacking group known as Salt Typhoon of infiltrating several organisations nationwide.
In a report released on Friday, the Norwegian Police Security Service said the group, which authorities believe operates on behalf of the Chinese government, exploited vulnerable network devices to carry out espionage activities.
Norway is the latest nation to confirm an intrusion linked to Salt Typhoon publicly.
Senior U.S. national security officials have previously described Salt Typhoon as an “epoch-defining threat.” The group has spent years quietly compromising the networks of critical infrastructure organisations worldwide, including major telecommunications providers in Canada and the United States. In those cases, the hackers are alleged to have intercepted the communications of senior political figures, a wave of breaches that intensified pressure on telecom companies to strengthen their cybersecurity defences.
The Norwegian report provided limited details on the specific hacking operations conducted in the country. A spokesperson for Norway’s embassy in the United States did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
