Valar Atomics Raises $1 Billion Led by Sequoia to Scale Small Nuclear Reactors
Nuclear startup Valar Atomics has raised $1 billion, led by Sequoia, as it scales production of its small modular reactors for AI and energy applications.
Nuclear startup Valar Atomics has raised $1 billion in equity financing led by Sequoia, confirming reports that it was closing a major funding round to accelerate production of its small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs). The company also secured a $200 million line of credit from Erebor and other banks, while Sequoia partner Shaun Maguire joined its board of directors.
Valar did not disclose its valuation, although Bloomberg reported the financing values the company at $6 billion. The new capital will support the company’s efforts to manufacture fleets of factory-built reactors designed to provide power for AI infrastructure and other energy-intensive applications.
Focus on small modular reactors
Valar develops small modular reactors, which are designed to be less expensive and faster to build than conventional nuclear power plants. In June, the company said its Ward 250 reactor successfully powered an Nvidia Blackwell system and announced an agreement with Nvidia to develop a waterless 30-megawatt AI factory.
The company said each reactor it builds generates engineering, manufacturing and operational data that helps improve future reactor designs and shortens development cycles. According to Valar, it took two years to complete its NOVA core and seven months to bring the Ward 250 reactor to criticality. It expects those timelines to continue shrinking as production scales.
Funding to expand manufacturing
Valar said the latest funding will help it move toward its next milestone of manufacturing fleets of small modular reactors. The company believes increasing production will allow it to build tens, then hundreds, and eventually thousands of reactors annually.
The startup joins a growing group of nuclear energy companies attracting significant investor interest. In recent months, Antares raised $470 million, while X-energy secured $1 billion through its initial public offering.
Investors join latest round.
In addition to Sequoia, the financing included Apandion Capital, Atreides Management, Conviction, Dream Ventures, HOF Capital, Point72 Ventures, Riot Ventures, Snowpoint Ventures and Valour Equity Partners.
