Spotify is rolling out a new setting that lets parents keep kids’ and family music from affecting their recommendations and year-end Wrapped results. The new kids and family music toggle is launching globally on mobile for both Free and Premium users.

The setting is designed for households where children regularly use a parent’s Spotify account through smart speakers, TVs, cars or other shared devices. When enabled, Spotify will automatically exclude music intended for children from the account holder’s taste profile.

Kids’ music can now stay out of Spotify recommendations

Spotify says the setting covers music such as nursery rhymes, songs from animated movies and family television shows, and other tracks created specifically for children. Once excluded, those plays will no longer influence personalised features such as Discover Weekly or Daily Mix.

The change also applies retroactively. That means previously streamed kids’ music can be excluded from the listening history used to determine top songs and artists in Spotify Wrapped.

The feature will continue to include kids’ music in a user’s taste profile by default. Parents who want those streams ignored must turn on the new setting.

Parents have complained about the problem for years

Shared listening has long frustrated parents whose children’s favourite songs end up dominating recommendations and Wrapped results. Requests for a broader solution have appeared in the Spotify Community, while parents have also shared similar complaints on Reddit.

The issue has also drawn wider attention through reports and personal accounts from Newsweek, Austin Moms, Scary Mommy and KHOU.

Spotify previously allowed listeners to exclude individual songs or playlists from their taste profiles, but that required users to manage content manually. The new toggle handles children’s music as a broader category instead.

Spotify has also expanded controls for younger listeners

The company has separately introduced Managed Accounts for listeners under 13, giving parents more control over how children discover and access music.

The latest change addresses a different problem: children listening through a parent’s account and unintentionally reshaping that adult’s personalisation. Spotify has also published additional newsroom information about its personalisation features and updates.
