Former TikTok Executives Launch AI Photo App Superpose to Teach Better Poses

Former TikTok executives Melody Chu and Jing Liu have launched Superpose, an iOS camera app that uses artificial intelligence to help users improve their portrait photography by suggesting poses.

The app is designed around a simple idea: instead of generating entirely artificial images, Superpose uses AI as a photography guide to help people capture better real-life moments.

AI generates pose suggestions for photos

Superpose works as a camera application where users can upload a selfie or a photo of another person. The app then generates four possible poses that users can save or try to recreate using its match-pose feature.

Some AI-generated suggestions can be highly stylised, and the company acknowledges that certain results may appear unnatural. Superpose says it is working to improve generation styles, personalisation, and real-time guidance through the camera viewfinder.

Founders bring experience from TikTok and other tech companies

Before creating Superpose, Chu worked in product roles at companies including Meta, Nextdoor, Roblox, TikTok and Slack. Liu previously worked as a founding engineer at a 3D face-scanning startup and later contributed to image and video models at TikTok.

Chu said the idea for Superpose came from a personal frustration with taking better photos. She believed advances in computer vision and generative AI could help solve the common challenge of knowing how to pose in front of a camera.

Superpose focuses on real photography instead of AI-generated worlds

Superpose launched in July and has been downloaded more than 22,000 times, the company says. Users have generated more than 190,000 poses through the app.

The app offers five free generations per day. Users can buy additional generations through paid packs, including five extra generations for $2.99 or 20 generations for $9.99.

While several companies are exploring AI-assisted photography, Superpose says it wants to focus on capturing real experiences rather than creating artificial backgrounds or placing people in fictional environments.

The company has raised $2.2 million from investors including Khosla Ventures, Meitu and OVTR VC to continue developing its AI-powered photography experience.
