Amazon is bringing short-form news video to Prime Video as streaming services compete for viewers who increasingly consume news in quick clips rather than traditional broadcasts.

The company said Prime Video is expanding its news destination with on-demand clips covering local and national stories. The videos are initially available on TVs and other living-room devices, with web support and Prime Video’s iOS and Android apps planned next.

The clips will appear in the Trending Topics and Local News carousels. Prime Video already offers local, national and international news from multiple providers, and that news content is available to U.S. viewers even without a Prime subscription.

Prime Video targets changing news habits

Amazon has not yet confirmed whether the mobile clips will use the vertical-video format popularised by TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts. The company has only said they will be presented as short-form content on mobile devices.

The strategy reflects a broader shift in how younger audiences encounter news. Pew Research findings on Gen Z news consumption show the growing importance of TikTok and other social platforms as news sources for younger users.

That shift is not simply about video length. Younger audiences often respond to news that feels less polished and more native to social platforms, making presentation as important as duration. Previous research into TikTok and Gen Z news habits has similarly highlighted the platform’s growing role in how younger people discover current events.

Additional reporting on Pew’s findings underscores the challenge for traditional media and streaming platforms trying to reproduce the appeal of social video without becoming full social networks themselves.

Streamers embrace shorter video

Prime Video is not alone in adopting the format. Peacock introduced short-form clips earlier this year, followed by HBO Max and Netflix in July and Disney+ in August.

The trend suggests major streaming platforms are adjusting to viewing habits shaped by TikTok, Instagram and YouTube Shorts. Instead of asking users to commit to full programs, services are increasingly offering content that can be consumed in minutes or even seconds.

For Amazon, short-form news gives Prime Video another way to compete for attention without building a standalone social network. Whether that approach can match the discovery, personality and immediacy that attract younger users to social platforms remains a separate challenge.
