Snapchat is expanding beyond messaging with Snapchat Plans, a new set of event-planning tools that lets users create private gatherings, send invitations and manage RSVPs without leaving the app.

The company announced Snapchat Plans on Thursday, positioning the feature as a way to turn conversations between friends into organised real-world meetups. Plans can be used for birthdays, sporting events, study sessions, weekend gatherings and other activities.

Users can create a Snapchat Plan by entering a title, date, and time, then inviting up to 200 friends. Each invitation is delivered through a one-on-one Snapchat conversation, where recipients can respond with Going, Maybe or Can’t Go.

Snapchat brings event management into profiles

A new My Plans section on Snapchat profiles collects current, upcoming and previous events in one place. Friendship Profiles will also display an Our Plans section showing events shared between two friends.

Hosts can see who is attending, add more guests and update event information after a Plan has been created. Guests can view the full attendee list, change their RSVP and receive a reminder one hour before an event begins.

Snapchat says Plans are private and invite-only. The company is also working on the ability to create events directly from conversations, building the planning tools more closely into the messaging experience.

Snapchat targets growing interest in real-world meetups

The launch puts Snapchain in more direct competition with event-planning services such as Partiful, which has gained popularity for digital invitations and organising social gatherings. Apple has also entered the category with its Invites app.

Snapchat’s move comes as interest in regular in-person social connections has become more visible among Gen Z. Separate research and cultural trends also point to young consumers placing greater value on in-person experiences.

Snapchat says 35% of recently surveyed U.S. Snapchatters ages 13 to 24 already use group chats to make plans and organise events. Plans gives those users a dedicated structure for keeping dates, attendance information, and invitations from getting buried in conversations.

For Snapchat, the feature extends the app’s role from helping friends communicate online to helping them coordinate what they do together offline, while keeping the planning process inside an app they already use to stay in touch.
