Google, Nvidia, and Anthropic Join Emerald AI Alliance to Expand Data Centre Capacity
Emerald AI, Google, Nvidia, and Anthropic launch an alliance to help data centres manage power demand and expand grid capacity.
Google, Nvidia, and Anthropic have joined Emerald AI to create the AI Energy Management Alliance, an initiative focused on helping data centres manage electricity demand and connect more facilities to the power grid.
The alliance aims to expand demand response technology, where data centres temporarily reduce or shift electricity use during periods of high demand. The group says this approach could help unlock additional grid capacity for future AI data centres.
Using software to manage AI power demand
The AI Energy Management Alliance includes technology companies and utilities such as AES, Constellation, National Grid, and NRG Energy. The group plans to make flexible power management a larger part of data centre development.
Emerald AI’s software connects utilities with data centres, allowing operators to pause noncritical workloads or move computing tasks to locations with available power capacity. The approach is designed as an alternative to relying only on backup generators during periods of grid stress.
Utilities have used demand response programs for decades, traditionally involving large electricity users such as factories. Data centres are increasingly joining these programs as AI workloads increase electricity demand.
Funding and expansion plans
Emerald AI recently raised $150 million in a Series A funding round led by Energise Capital and DCVC to expand its technology. The company says its platform can help reduce pressure on power infrastructure, although it will not eliminate the need for additional energy generation.
As AI data centre demand continues growing, Emerald AI and its partners are positioning grid flexibility as one tool to help technology companies and utilities manage future infrastructure needs.
Emerald AI’s Series A announcement highlighted its plans to scale power-flexible AI data centre technology.
