Huawei Moves Up Launch of Ascend 960DT AI Chip to Challenge Nvidia

Huawei is accelerating the launch of its next-generation AI chip as the Chinese technology company continues to build its artificial intelligence hardware capabilities and compete with Nvidia in the AI computing market.

The company said its Ascend 960DT AI chip is now expected to launch in the first quarter of 2027, earlier than the previously planned third-quarter release. Huawei announced the updated timeline during Huawei Connect.

Huawei expands AI computing architecture

Huawei is developing a broader AI computing system called Peerium Computing Architecture, which connects large numbers of AI chips into integrated computing systems. The company said the architecture uses its UnifiedBus technology to link processors with memory, storage, and networking components.

The company’s Atlas 950 SuperPoD and SuperCluster systems are based on this architecture. Huawei said the Atlas 950 SuperCluster can connect up to 256,000 accelerator cards for AI training and inference workloads.

Questions around Huawei’s AI system scale

The faster chip timeline has raised questions about the scale of Huawei’s planned AI systems. China technology analyst Rui Ma noted in a post on X that earlier details about the Atlas 960 SuperPoD differed from the system specifications discussed in the latest announcement.

Huawei has continued developing its AI chips despite U.S. restrictions on advanced semiconductor technology. Analysts have said those restrictions have not stopped China’s efforts to build domestic semiconductor capabilities.

The announcement comes as competition between the U.S. and China over AI development continues. Reports from The Washington Post and the Financial Times have covered the ongoing debate over AI development and competition between the two countries.
