Google Home Adds AI Agent Support Through MCP Server

Google is bringing AI agent support to its Google Home ecosystem through a new Model Context Protocol (MCP) server, allowing compatible AI agents to interact with smart home devices.

The early-access rollout will let MCP-supporting AI agents securely connect with Google Home devices, access event history, and complete tasks using natural-language instructions. Google already supports MCP across several services, including cloud, developer tools, and Workspace platforms through its supported MCP products.

AI agents gain control over smart home devices

With the new Google Home MCP integration, users can ask AI agents to review camera summaries, monitor smart home activity, control connected devices, and create custom smart home dashboards.

The system supports devices across the Google Home ecosystem, including Google Nest doorbells, thermostats, and compatible “Works with Google Home” and Matter devices such as smart lights.

Setup and availability

To connect an AI agent with Google Home, users need to create a Google Cloud project, configure Home MCP, and provide the required settings to their preferred AI agent. The agent will then guide users through signing in and approving permissions.

Google said it is rolling out early access to subscribers of Google Home Premium Advanced in the US. The subscription includes features such as extended video history, detailed notifications, video search tools, and daily summaries through Google Home Premium.

The company has not confirmed when MCP support will expand to other subscription tiers or additional markets. Google is collecting feedback from early users through its Smart Home for Developers Community.

Google expands AI agent ecosystem

The Google Home update follows the broader adoption of MCP, a standard that lets AI agents securely interact with external services and tools. Developers can also configure MCP servers for Google services through Google Workspace MCP resources.

As AI agents become more capable of completing everyday tasks, Google is positioning smart home controls as another area where users can interact with technology through natural language commands.
