Meta is reportedly developing a new pair of smart glasses called Luna that will remove built-in cameras and focus on AI-powered features instead. The move comes as the company faces ongoing privacy concerns around its existing camera-equipped smart glasses.

According to The Information’s report, Luna will include access to Meta’s AI chatbot and Muse, the company’s AI consumer agent. The glasses are expected to use six built-in microphones for voice interaction, along with a side button that activates the AI system.

Meta explores a different approach to smart glasses

Meta could unveil Luna during its annual Meta Connect event in Menlo Park, although the company has not confirmed the device or its launch plans.

The company’s current smart glasses have helped make AI wearables more visible to consumers, and Meta’s early investment in smart glasses has drawn attention across the wearable technology market. However, privacy concerns have remained a challenge, particularly because camera-equipped glasses can raise questions about recording and consent.

Reports from The Wall Street Journal and Yahoo Tech have highlighted privacy advocates’ concerns about the wider adoption of smart glasses.

The smart glasses market continues to attract interest as companies explore AI-powered wearable devices. Citigroup’s analysis of AI glasses has pointed to growing attention around the category.

Meta’s Reality Labs division, which develops the company’s smart glasses and other advanced hardware projects, continues to invest in these technologies while facing significant costs associated with its hardware efforts.
