Global Memory Shortage Reduces MacBook Air Availability as Apple Faces Supply Constraints

Apple is reportedly facing tighter MacBook Air supplies as a global memory chip shortage continues to disrupt the technology industry. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, rising demand from artificial intelligence companies for memory components has expanded the shortage beyond Apple’s desktop lineup and is now affecting its most popular laptop.

The supply constraints had previously been seen with the Mac mini and Mac Studio, but the MacBook Air is now experiencing reduced availability at retailers. Customers ordering directly through Apple’s online store are also encountering longer delivery estimates for several configurations.

AI-driven memory demand pressures supply

Bloomberg reported that growing demand for memory chips from AI-focused companies has tightened global supplies, making it more difficult for hardware manufacturers to secure enough components. The impact has reportedly spread across multiple Apple product lines as inventory becomes more constrained.

On Apple’s website, some MacBook Air models are not expected to ship until the second half of August, while certain configurations show estimated delivery dates extending into September.

Apple adjusts sourcing and marketing strategy.

According to the report, Apple is responding by increasing prices and expanding its memory sourcing to include suppliers in China. The company has also reportedly postponed its annual back-to-school promotion, which traditionally begins in June.

The latest marketing campaign places greater emphasis on the entry-level MacBook Pro instead of the MacBook Air. Promotional materials also include a notice stating that the MacBook Air is “subject to availability,” reflecting the ongoing supply challenges.

Apple has not publicly announced changes to its MacBook Air production. The reported adjustments come as technology companies continue to compete for memory components needed to support the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure.
