Google Makes It Easier to Switch Password Managers on Android

Google is making it easier for Android users to switch password managers with a new transfer system that moves passwords and passkeys directly between supported apps without requiring CSV files.

Users can begin the process inside their new password manager by choosing to import or copy credentials from an existing app. Android then detects compatible password managers on the device, coordinates the transfer and lets users review the information before approving it.

Passwords and passkeys can move together

The system supports both passwords and passkeys, so users don’t need to manually recreate supported passkeys after changing services. It also removes the need to export credentials to CSV files, which can expose sensitive information if the files are stored insecurely or not deleted after migration.

Google says the new switching experience is already supported by Google Password Manager and selected partners, including Bitwarden, 1Password and Dashlane. More password manager apps are expected to add support in the future.

The feature will be available on devices running Android 8 or newer. By simplifying credential transfers, Google is reducing one of the biggest practical barriers users face when moving between password managers while also making the process safer for passwords and passkeys.
